A new lens, 50mm f/1.8

Finally, I bought it. After borrowing this lens from a colleague I was finally brave enough to buy my first additional lens.

A while ago I had a course given by Mike Flam, a professional photographer. One of the most important things he taught me is: “A photograph can always be better” and “First learn what you like to photograph, then buy an additional lens”

So that was the thing I was doing. I made a lot of pictures with my Canon 450D kit lens and came to the conclusion I like it all. I take portraits, nature, buildings, cars… I can’t think of something what I do not like to photograph.

In the beginning I was not comfortable making a picture of a stranger, until I made the image you can see below…

The guys in the picture got really enthusiastic when I arrived with my camera, giving me the best possibilities for some great shots. The one on top is the best one (I think), but still not perfect though.

Since that time, I have no problem making photos from a person without asking before. Mike told me “If you hold your camera in plain sight people will expect you to make pictures, If they don’t want to be on you photo, they walk away. But it never happened to me”.

Since then I was taking more and more portraits. We are expecting a baby soon, and I think this is the perfect lens to make great photo’s from our baby girl.

Below one of the first images I made with my new 50mm f/1.8 lens

But still, I need to get used to the fixed 50mm..
